The commercial expansion of Rockville led to a population surge
Rockville is the seat of Montgomery County and the fourth-largest city in Maryland, named for its proximity to Rock Creek, a 32-mile tributary and regional park that runs south from Derwood, Maryland, to the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. The city was connected to the vital Baltimore & Ohio Railroad in the early 19th century, but today, that same rail line shuttles commuters to and from Washington DC on the MARC train. According to city government statistics, the population growth of the city was spurred by the post-World War II housing boom. The 2020 census calculated that there are around 68,000 residents in the city.
The namesake Rock Creek Park of the city
Rock Creek Regional Park encompasses 1,800 acres and includes 75-acre Lake Needwood and 55-acre Lake Frank. Residents can easily spend an entire day at the park, canoeing, picnicking, fishing or hiking along the 13 miles trails of woodland.
