Patuxent River recreation and commuter access to D.C. and Baltimore
On the southern banks of the Patuxent River, Burtonsville was originally founded as a farming community in 1825. Today, the town holds onto its rural roots with several horse stables, hunting areas and fishing spots on the river. Its residents enjoy these outdoorsy activities, which keep them within daily travel distance to Washington, D.C., and Baltimore. Laurel is less-than-30-mile drive to get to D.C. and is approximately an equidistance of Baltimore and the National Capital and is a convenient option for those looking to access both.
Officially incorporated in 1870 but with settlements dating back to the 18th century, the city has a historic charm reflected in its Main Street shopping and dining area. With a population of about 30,000, Laurel is small enough for residents to know their neighbors but big enough that they have plenty to do. With various restaurants and retail chains, Laurel combines the amenities of big-city living with the charm of a historic small town.
