Afghan Community Brings Football to the Diaspora World Cup
You may have heard footballing rumors and stories for well over two years that the Diaspora Community of Afghanistan in the USA will be joining the Diaspora World Cup. Well, it’s no longer a rumor. They are here. They are here not just to play, but, to win. Head Coach Zia Panjsheri has a lot on his plate as he is trying to strengthen the squad to get ASF Select back in the Group Game race. As of now, a return to the group A top four is his priority, followed by a desire to play the kind of attacking, dynamic brand of soccer his side delivered this past Memorial Day weekend in New Jersey when they were crowned AASA Soccer Champion.
According to the US Census Bureau and the Embassy of Afghanistan in Washington, DC, the over-all Afghan population in the United States in 2011 is around 300,000 with about 30,000 residing in Northern Virginia. To that end, many of those communities which are now part of the American melting pot are becoming more and more homogeneous. Consequently, we now all share a common goal of strengthening our geopolitical relation, leaning each other culture, and improving the world for the better though the most powerful tool: Soccer
Football Connects the Afghan Diaspora
Football has played an important role in bringing members of the Afghan community together in the United States. The Afghan Sports Federation describes its work as creating a community that connects people through sport while celebrating Afghan heritage.
Community football has also provided opportunities for younger generations of Afghan Americans to participate in sport alongside families and community members. The long-running Afghan Cup is one example of how organized football became part of Afghan community life in the United States.
A Growing Afghan Football Community
The Afghan football community in the United States has developed over many years. The Afghan Sports Federation now operates programs across several sports and describes its membership as including first-generation immigrants, second-generation Afghan Americans and Afghan nationals.
This development reflects the broader role of sport within diaspora communities. Football can preserve cultural connections while creating a shared space where people of different generations can participate, compete and celebrate their heritage together
Afghan Community Brings Football to the Diaspora World Cup
The Afghan community's involvement in diaspora football reflects the wider ability of sport to connect people living away from their country of origin. Football gives diaspora communities an opportunity to maintain cultural identity while participating in the sporting life of their adopted communities.
For Afghan Americans, that connection has continued through organized leagues, tournaments and community sports programs. The Afghan Sports Federation's long-running work demonstrates how football can become more than competition, serving as a way to build community, preserve heritage and create connections across generations.
