Significance
Immigration from Mauritius has generally reflected British colonial rule, educational opportunities, professional employment, economic development, family reunification, international business, skilled migration, and cultural exchange.
Migration from Mauritius has historically been shaped by its multicultural society, strategic location in the Indian Ocean, and longstanding ties with the United Kingdom and France. Mauritians have commonly migrated to the United Kingdom, France, Australia, Canada, and neighboring countries for higher education, employment, business, and family reunification. Overseas migration expanded after independence as students, healthcare professionals, academics, entrepreneurs, government officials, and skilled workers pursued international educational and professional opportunities. Today, Mauritian immigrants in the United States maintain strong cultural, linguistic, and family ties with their homeland while contributing to a wide range of professional fields.
Mauritian Migration Before Independence
Before independence, Mauritius was successively governed by the Dutch, French, and British, becoming a British colony in 1810. Migration during the colonial period was influenced by sugar plantation agriculture, maritime trade, government administration, missionary education, and the arrival of indentured laborers, particularly from India, after the abolition of slavery. Residents also travelled abroad as merchants, students, civil servants, teachers, and skilled workers. Direct migration to the United States remained relatively limited because political, educational, and commercial connections were centred primarily on the United Kingdom, France, and other parts of the British Empire. Mauritius gained independence from the United Kingdom on March 12, 1968, and the United States recognized the new nation shortly thereafter before establishing diplomatic relations.
Late-Twentieth- and Early-Twenty-First-Century Immigration
Migration increased after independence as economic diversification, expanding educational opportunities, globalization, and professional careers encouraged many Mauritians to seek opportunities abroad. Students, physicians, engineers, scientists, academics, entrepreneurs, information technology specialists, financial professionals, and business executives increasingly travelled to the United States for university education, specialized employment, research, investment, or family reunification. Academic exchange programs, multinational corporations, and international business partnerships have continued to support migration in recent decades. In the United States, Mauritian immigrants often rely on family networks, churches, temples, mosques, cultural associations, alumni organizations, and professional groups for support with housing, employment, education, and community integration while preserving English, French, Mauritian Creole, Bhojpuri, traditional cuisine, cultural festivals, religious practices, and close relationships with relatives in Mauritius.
