Immigration from Hungary has generally reflected political change, war, economic opportunity, educational advancement, professional employment, family reunification, scientific research, and international business.
Migration from Hungary has played an important role in the history of the United States since the nineteenth century. Large numbers of Hungarians emigrated during periods of political unrest, economic hardship, and social transformation, seeking greater economic opportunity and personal freedom abroad. Significant waves of migration followed the failed Hungarian Revolution of 1848, the aftermath of the First and Second World Wars, and the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, when thousands fled Soviet repression. Today, immigration from Hungary is primarily driven by higher education, specialized employment, research, entrepreneurship, multinational business, and family reunification, with Hungarian immigrants maintaining strong cultural and economic ties with their homeland.
Hungarian Migration Before Independence
Before the twentieth century, Hungary formed part of the Kingdom of Hungary, later becoming a major constituent of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Migration during this period was influenced by agricultural change, industrialization, political reform, military service, and economic opportunity. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, millions of people from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, including many Hungarians, emigrated to the United States as farmers, miners, factory workers, craftsmen, merchants, teachers, and professionals. The collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire after the First World War led to the establishment of an independent Hungarian state in 1918, followed by significant political and territorial changes that continued to influence migration patterns.
Late-Twentieth- and Early-Twenty-First-Century Immigration
Migration increased after the Second World War, particularly following the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, when thousands of refugees sought asylum and resettlement in the United States and other Western countries. In later decades, students, physicians, engineers, scientists, academics, entrepreneurs, information technology specialists, and business professionals increasingly travelled to the United States for university education, specialized employment, research, investment, or family reunification. Academic exchange programs, multinational companies, and scientific collaboration have continued to support migration in recent years. In the United States, Hungarian immigrants often rely on family networks, churches, cultural organizations, alumni associations, and professional groups for support with housing, employment, education, and social integration while preserving the Hungarian language, traditional cuisine, music, cultural festivals, religious traditions, and close relationships with relatives in Hungary.
