Significance
Belizean immigration to the United States has generally reflected colonial history, limited employment opportunities, hurricanes, education, family connections, economic hardship, and the search for improved wages and professional careers.
Belizean migration to the United States began during the early twentieth century and increased significantly after World War II. Economic limitations, a small domestic labour market, natural disasters, and established family networks encouraged residents to relocate to New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, New Orleans, and other metropolitan areas. Migration expanded after Hurricane Hattie devastated Belize in 1961 and continued as the country approached independence. Belizeans entered the United States for employment, education, professional training, healthcare, and family reunification. Creole and Garifuna migrants formed an important part of these communities, while remittances and return visits helped families maintain close economic and cultural relationships with Belize.
Belizean Migration Before Independence
Before independence, migration was shaped by British colonial rule, forestry, maritime trade, agriculture, and movement between Belize, Mexico, Guatemala, the Caribbean, and the United States. The territory became the British colony of British Honduras in 1862 and was renamed Belize in 1973. Limited industrial development and employment encouraged residents to travel abroad as sailors, agricultural workers, domestic workers, craftspeople, students, and professionals. Belizeans began settling in American cities during the early twentieth century, particularly where relatives and English-speaking Caribbean communities were already established. Hurricanes and economic difficulties later accelerated outward movement, while migrants created churches, cultural associations, businesses, and family networks that helped new arrivals obtain housing and employment.
Late-Twentieth-Century Immigration
Belize gained independence from Britain on September 21, 1981, but migration to the United States continued because of employment, education, family reunification, and higher wages. During the 1980s and 1990s, Belizean communities expanded in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, and New Orleans. Family sponsorship became an especially important immigration pathway, and recent data show that most Belizean nationals receiving permanent residence in the United States obtained it through family relationships. At the same time, conflict in neighbouring Central American countries brought migrants and refugees into Belize, making the country both a source and destination of international migration. Belizean immigrants preserved Kriol, Garifuna, Maya, Mestizo, and other traditions through food, music, religious institutions, festivals, community organisations, and continued contact with relatives at home.
